Whether you’re new to enamel or already have some experience, this immersive 5-day intensive will guide you through a range of exciting enamel techniques.
This intensive is perfect for anyone wanting a focused, creative week to explore enamel jewellery making. Each day introduces new techniques, building your confidence and skills as you experiment and create a collection of finished pieces.
Day 1: Creative Enamelling (Dry Application)
Experiment with powder enamel and dry sifting
Work on copper squares with transparent and opaque colours
Learn how enamel behaves and explore pattern and texture
Day 2: Wet Application & Advanced Techniques
Wash, grind and apply enamel with a brush
Blend transparent colours and create depth and texture
Work on fine silver squares — texture, saw pierce shapes, and enamel over them
We will explore techniques for enamelling on textured surfaces: basse-taille (enamelling over the top of texture) and champlevé (enamelling within recesses in the metal)
If there is time we will also explore foiling
Day 3: Cloisonné
Bend and shape fine silver wire to form outlines
Integrate wire designs into a fine silver disc
Apply a layer of clear enamel and fire
Use Klyr-fire to hold wires in place — burns away in the kiln without affecting enamel
Add colour with precise brushwork
Grind enamel back to create a smooth, polished surface
Day 4: Plique-à-Jour
Work with a pre-designed cast pendant to explore this challenging, stunning “stained glass” technique
Depletion gilding and filling the holes carefully
Create a translucent, light-catching enamel effect
Day 5: Your Own Project
Design your own enamelled piece using plique-à-jour or revisit another technique from the week
Experiment, refine, and complete a unique, finished piece
By the end of the week, you’ll have a collection of high-quality enamelled pieces, along with the confidence and know-how to continue exploring enamel techniques on your own.
