Stone Setting Evening Classes - 5 weeks

Love making silver jewellery and want to move onto the next challenge? Join us for this six week evening course to learn more technical skills.

This course is perfect for you if you have taken a beginners silver class and would like to develop your skills and work on a wider range of projects. 

When working in silver jewellery, soldering is one of the most essential and challenging skills. On this course you will spend the first two evenings perfecting your soldering techniques before putting these skills into practice by learning three different stone setting techniques – cabochon (rub over), tube and gypsy (flush) settings. 

During the course, the Tutor will also be talking about the qualities of different stones and considerations when setting them. 

What you will learn: 

• Weeks 1 & 2 - Making multiple joints in the same piece, soldering awkward joints and troubleshooting. This is an intermediate level course, but we will start from the basics of soldering and work to your level. You will not make finished pieces during these two weeks but focus on perfecting your technique. 

• Week 3 – Creating a simple cabochon (rub over) setting, which involves creating a bezel and encasing a cabochon-shaped stone. This is a key technique for setting stones and is very useful to add to your repertoire of skills as it allows you to set a range of natural stones in a range of sizes. 

• Week 4 – Tube setting. This is a simple yet effective technique for neatly setting usually small stones into silver tube. It's a great contrast to the rub over setting and adds a new dimension to your jewellery. 

• Weeks 5 & 6 – Gypsy (flush) setting and finishing your projects. Flush setting or gypsy setting is a neat way of setting your stones into the metal, which still allows a flat finish to the piece so that your stone is well protected and again adds a new design element to your pieces. 

What you need to bring to this class: 

For this class you don't need to bring anything but yourself as everything is provided.  

This class runs from 6.30pm-9pm on the same day once a week from the start date for six consecutive weeks. Please note: the class will run on bank holidays.  

General Info: 

As with all of our classes, all materials are included in the cost of the class as well as plenty of tea, coffee and luxury biscuits! The classes are all run by expert tutors with years of professional experience who are friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. The size of the classes is kept small to allow plenty of one-on-one attention and the maximum number of students for this class is 8.
