Wax carving is an ancient jewellery-making technique where jewellers’ wax is shaped a bit like a sculptor working into stone. Traditionally, you file and carve wax away — but in this class you’ll learn the wax build-up method, where you melt and add wax in layers to slowly build your form. It’s brilliant for creating organic shapes, textured surfaces and more expressive designs.
Once your wax models are made, they can be sent to a caster to be transformed into metal — silver, gold, bronze or whatever you choose.
In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll explore the full build-up process to create pendants, charms and rings using techniques inspired by granulation and cast-in-place stone setting.
What you’ll make
Throughout the day you’ll create:
A build-up letter pendant
A round pendant with gemstones
A wax-built ring
Plus plenty of time to experiment with your own ideas
You’ll learn
How to design for wax build-up
How to melt, layer and refine wax to create form (rather than carving it away)
Techniques that mimic granulation-style textures
Cast-in-place stone setting in wax
How to prepare wax masters ready for casting
Where to get your pieces cast locally and affordably
…and lots more!
Please note: This is a one-day class focused on wax build-up techniques. Your tutor will explain the casting process, and we’ll recommend reliable casting companies, but casting itself isn’t included in the class.
