In this one-day Level 2 course, you’ll design and make a beautiful statement claw-set ring in wax using the build-up method. It’s the perfect next step if you’ve taken our Level 1 Wax Build-Up class, or if you already have some experience working with wax and want to develop more technical setting skills.
In this class, rather than carving wax away, you’ll focus on the build-up method – melting and adding wax in layers to carefully construct your design. This approach is ideal for organic forms, expressive surfaces, and strong structural elements like claws.
Your finished wax ring can then be sent to a caster to be transformed into metal – silver, gold, bronze, or another metal of your choice.
What you’ll make
Throughout the day, you’ll focus on creating:
• One claw-set ring in wax
• Designed to securely hold a single stone
• With time to refine proportions, claw shape and overall design
This class is all about depth rather than lots of small projects, giving you time to really understand the process.
You’ll learn
• How to design a claw-set ring specifically for wax build-up
• How to melt, layer and control wax to create strong, clean claw forms
• Techniques for building and positioning claws to hold a stone securely
• How to refine and strengthen your wax model ready for casting
• Best practice for setting stones in wax for casting
• How to prepare your wax master for professional casting
• Where to get your pieces cast locally and affordably
…and plenty of tips and troubleshooting along the way.
Please note
This is a one-day class focused on wax build-up and claw setting techniques. Your tutor will explain the casting process and recommend trusted casting companies, but casting itself isn’t included in the class.
