Learn the beautiful and technically challenging technique of Plique-à-jour enamelling — often described as “enamel stained glass.” This method creates delicate, light-catching designs where transparent enamel is suspended within fine silver, allowing light to shine through the finished piece.
This class is ideal for anyone who has completed Enamelling Level 3: Cloisonné or has some previous experience working with enamel and silver. You’ll be guided through each stage of the process and supported as you create your own small enamelled pendant or decorative piece.
What you’ll learn:
Preparation and depletion gilding of the silver to ensure a perfect surface for enamelling
Applying and firing transparent enamels into open cells for that distinctive glass-like effect
Building up thin layers of enamel and managing firing times carefully to achieve clarity and strength
Finishing, cleaning and refining your enamelled piece to enhance its luminosity
You’ll be working with a pre-designed cast sterling silver pendant so you can focus on mastering the technique and achieving beautiful, even colour and light.
By the end of the day, you’ll have a finished piece that captures the delicate beauty of light through colour — and a deeper understanding of this traditional, rewarding process.
What to bring:
You don’t need to bring anything — all materials are provided.
Good to know:
All materials, tea, coffee and snacks are included. Classes are small (maximum 8 students), giving you plenty of one-to-one support from your experienced tutor.
This is an advanced course and you need to have previous experience with enamel.
